Rites of passage serve not only to publicly acknowledge the individual's
transition from one life cycle to another, but more fundamentally to
facilitate within the individual a marked change and their personal
acceptance of such a transformation. In doing so the individual acquires or
gains access to religious, magical, social and economical knowledge. In
performing rites of passage we help facilitate transformation, help the
individual acquire new knowledge, status and identity and publicly
acknowledge their transition from one life cycle to the next. This is
extremely important in maintaining healthy balanced individuals both
psychologically and spiritually, especially so with teenagers. Essentially
by being provided a rite of passage the individual is offered a means to
shed one identity for another, thus reorganizing his or her entire world
view.
